As technology has grown and developed, society and the workforce have become more specialized. The days of graduating with a high school diploma, and being able to enter the workforce directly are almost gone, and education beyond high school has practically become a necessity. For some, this may mean the pursuit of a four-year college degree. For others, career training may seem to be a better option. Vocational education and training is a respected career path for those who wish to enter a specific field, and the trades continue to be highly in demand and worthy positions.
Career training may be the right course for those who do not wish to spend years in school, studying topics that may or may not relate to their field of interest. Because vocational schools focus specifically on the field of study, there are limited general education requirements. This means less time spent in school, since one does not have to spend years simply fulfilling requirements, and more time spent on learning one’s chosen trade. In addition, students who learn best with hands-on learning may find vocational training rewarding, as this is the primary method of instruction.
Vocational jobs are a good option for those who do not want jobs that will end up being shipped overseas. Employment in vocational fields will continue to exist since these positions are difficult to outsource. Tradesmen such as plumbers, mechanics, and electricians will always be needed and their jobs cannot be performed by workers in a remote location. For one who enjoys working in and with their local community, opportunities abound. Vocational education and training prepares one for such positions.
Vocational jobs are excellent for those who enjoy working with people, but who, at the same time, also like to work independently. People who work in the various trades taught in vocational education frequently work in a team envirionment, whether as an electrician doing wiring on a new house, or a plumber installing piping. They must have the skills to work cooperatively with those around them. At the same time, each worker does their job independently and without constant supervision.
Career training is a good choice for someone interested in self-employment. Some vocations such as plumbers and electricians require one to work as an apprentice under a master craftsman until they reach a certain level of proficiency; however, eventually one will be at the point to successfully work for themselves. In addition, many vocations lend themselves to immediate independent work so starting a business directly out of school is a possibility.
When seeking a career path, one must always consider their own interests, and passions. Vocational education and training is an excellent opportunity for those who enjoy working in stable fields in their own community, for those who enjoy both working with others and alone, and for those who prefer to work in a hands-on environment that enables them to become experienced in their chosen field.
