Description & Learning objectives

This course explores attachment and bonding in children who have experienced abuse or neglect and explains why understanding these relationships is essential for professionals working with vulnerable children and young people. Learners will develop a clear understanding of how trauma affects emotional development, behaviour, and relationships, and how supportive, consistent care can help rebuild trust and resilience. The course combines theory, research, and practical guidance to help professionals respond to children’s needs in a compassionate, trauma-informed, and consistent way within their everyday roles.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Assess the attachment needs of children and young people who have experienced abuse or neglect.
  • Analyse how trauma and disrupted caregiving relationships influence behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and development.
  • Lead attachment-informed practice within teams and care environments.
  • Develop consistent routines and supportive relationships that help children feel safe and secure.
  • Critically evaluate how policies, procedures, and systems support attachment-informed practice.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and other professionals to promote stable, trauma-informed care for children and young people.

This course is CPD accredited and adheres to the training, support and development standards outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
