Description & Learning objectives

Domestic violence is defined as any incident of threatening behaviour or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional) between adults who have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.

This course enables carers to understand the key issues facing children who have experienced domestic violence and abuse and how to help them develop resilience and become more able to grow towards being healthy and positive adults.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To increase our understanding of the impact of domestic violence on children and to develop strategies to enable them to overcome it
  • To explore the relationship between domestic violence and abuse on child protection and safeguarding procedures
  • To explore the history and context of law, marriage, and civil partnership
  • To explore the history and context of domestic violence
  • To understand the impact of domestic violence on children and young people
  • To help carers develop strategies and procedures to support children and young people who have experienced domestic violence

This course is CPD accredited and adheres to the training, support and development standards outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011. It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators - namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).
