Description & Learning objectives

This module sets out to examine the various assessments and treatment approaches utilised when working with children and young people. A variety of approaches exist, and it is important to recognise how one approach does not fit all. Due to the idiosyncratic nature of mental health problems in young people, it is essential to aim to find an approach to treating a child or young person’s mental health problem which is helpful for them personally.

The module also outlines the importance of outcome monitoring and children and young people providing feedback on the care they receive.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To review what is involved in carrying out mental health assessments of children and young people
  • To understand standardised assessment measures commonly used with children and young people. This includes the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCASD)
  • To be aware of the various psychological treatments available for children and young people, specifically Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Family and Systematic Therapy. In addition, the use of medication with children will be acknowledged
  • To understand the Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (CYP-IAPT) programme and the importance of outcome monitoring
