Description & Learning objectives

This course explores how foster carers and professionals can work constructively with birth parents while keeping the child’s safety, wellbeing, and emotional needs at the centre of practice. It provides practical guidance on communication, managing contact arrangements, understanding family dynamics, and responding to complex emotions in a trauma-informed way. Learners will develop the knowledge and confidence needed to support children’s relationships with their birth families in ways that promote stability, respect, and positive outcomes within foster care placements.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the importance of maintaining respectful and safe relationships with birth parents within foster care arrangements.
  • Recognise the emotional experiences of children and birth parents during foster placements and contact arrangements.
  • Apply trauma-informed communication techniques when interacting with birth parents.
  • Identify potential challenges and risks that may arise when working with birth parents.
  • Respond to children’s feelings and behaviours in ways that support their identity, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.
